Helping People Find an Item

When you are working at the Desk, there will be basically four requests to help find an item. If the situation is not any of those outlined below, ask an adult staff person to help you. However, if the person knows:

  1. The call number of the book he/she wants and only needs help in locating it in the stacks, simply go into the stacks on the main floor, and read the Call Number Locations sign to determine which floor the item will be on. Then, if someone can watch the Desk for you, ask them to do so and personally escort the person to the correct floor and shelf where the item should be located.
    • If no one can watch the Desk, then tell the person which floor to go to and how to find the item—but STAY at the Desk.
    • If the person comes back and cannot find the book (or you cannot find the book) look the item up in Primo and check to confirm that the item is "available".
  2. The title of an item, but does not know the call number or where to find it, simply select the Books+ tab of Primo (more information below), limit by Titlethen search for the title of the book.
  3. The name of the instructor who told them to get the book at the Library, it is most likely a book on Reserve (refer to Reserve instructions below)
  4. That someone emailed him/her to pick up an item, it is most likely on the Pick Up shelf.

Reserve Items

To find an item on reserve, select the Course Reserves tab on the Library's Homepage.

You may need to ask the student what course they are enrolled in before you can find the book.  You may also search by the student's instructor's last name, the course number, or even by the department under which the course falls.

The results of your search will display in the ODIN classic catalog.  You can use these results both to determine whether or not the item is available.  You can also see what other items are available to students of that particular class.
