APA stands for the American Psychological Association. Writing a paper in APA format just means you are following the APA's set of guidelines for academic writing.
To properly format your paper, use the following guidelines:
- The paper should be typed and double-spaced.
- The paper's margins should be set to 1 inch on all sides. Most word processors have 1-inch margins as the default setting.
- The paper should have a "running head" or page header on each page. Student papers only require a page number unless otherwise specified. Professional papers should have the first 50 characters of the title written in capital letters in the running head along with the page number.
- For this assignment, you will need to use the professional paper guidelines for your running head. See the How to Format Your Cover Page for instructions.
- Your paper should be written in a legible (i.e., accessible) font. According to the Purdue Online Writing Lab, "These include sans serif fonts such as 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, and 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode as well as serif fonts such as 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, 10-point Computer Modern" (n.d., para. 3)
