Audio Recording: Garage Band

GarageBand is most convenient way to record audio, because the program allows you to remove outtakes from your final audio track.

To record your audio track, have your script handy, and open GarageBand:

  • Click New Project
  • Select Voice
  • The Voice project defaults to a Male and Female voice--I find it is better to remove any effects whatsoever.  To do this:
    • Click on the track that you will be using, then view the effects menu on the right.
    • Keeping the broader heading "Vocals" selected, navigate to "No Effects" and select that option:

  • You can now begin recording your audio.  To do this, simply click the red record button at the bottom of the program's menu:

  • As you are recording your script, read from start to finish.  Read your script with natural pauses and breaks.  If you make a mistake, read the whole sentence or section containing your error over again.  This will allow you to edit out the mistake, leaving a seamless, perfect audio track.  To edit out a mistake:
    • Locate the beginning of the error on the pictorial display of your audio recording
    • Click on this "carrot" slider and move it to the exact point you would like to begin deleting:

    • Click "Edit" in the GarageBand toolbar, then click "Split."
    • You will now see that your audio track has been divided into two segments:

    • Click the segment you wish to remove, and simply press the Delete (Backspace) button on your keyboard.
    • You can now click and drag the trailing segments you wish to keep closer together, to give the impression of a continuous audio track.
  • Record your whole script in one sitting.  This is important--Do not try to record during multiple days.  The ambient differences in the room, as well as the changes in your voice, will be noticeable on the audio track.
  • Once you are finished, click "Share," then "Send Song to iTunes."  This will save an audio track of your recording to the iTunes folder, which can then be imported into iMovie for alignment with your recorded video.
